Minister’s
flippant comments show lack of understanding on importance of lab and
x-ray equipment
Recent comments made in the media by Health and
Community Services Minister Jerome Kennedy show that he is still not
recognizing that lab and x-ray services are needed in rural communities,
says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.
As reported by CBC, Minister Kennedy stated, “I'm
hopeful that we will reach a resolution and then at that point the X-ray
review may not be necessary. So, we are going to play it by ear right now
and really see where we go with Lewisporte and Flower's Cove."
“Jerome
Kennedy’s flippant comments show his lack of understanding and
commitment to rural health care,” says Ms. Jones. “Suggesting that he
will ‘play it by ear’ is an insult to the people who need these
services for their healthcare requirements. If the minister was truly
committed to restoring these services, he wouldn’t string people along
and ask them to give up other services that have already been approved for
their facilities. This approach is insulting and I fear this is another
smokescreen set by this government in an attempt to get through two
by-elections.”
Jones is
also questioning government’s true agenda when it comes to the lab and
x-ray review. All new x-ray purchases and installation has been put on
hold, particularly in Roddickton, Forteau, Deer Lake and Springdale.
Minister Kennedy has announced that the province-wide review to determine
whether other cuts are necessary may be cancelled.
“Former minister Paul Oram stated that ‘the intent of the provincial
assessment process is to build upon the strong healthcare foundation we
have in this province’. If this was the case, why would the new minister
state that the review may no longer be necessary? Through Minister
Kennedy’s comments, it is obvious that this review was not designed to
improve health services, but save money on the backs of those living in
rural communities. It is unfortunate that it took the resignation of two
ministers and the call of two by-elections to finally get the truth out of
this government regarding their real agenda of gutting rural health care
in this province.”
