The impact of the economic recession is taking a
significant toll on Labrador West and government must pay more attention
to the region, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones. Jones was in Labrador
West this week to meet with concerned citizens, unions, municipal leaders
and groups about their issues.
“There is a significant economic adjustment and
loss of jobs taking place in western Labrador due to the downturn in the
mineral sector,” said Ms. Jones. “Over 500 jobs have been lost and
there is significant concern as to the impacts this will have on the
economy of the region for the short-term, and the long-term should
commodity prices not rebound this year. I am calling for government
ministers and the premier to visit Labrador West to hear these concerns
first hand and take action.”
Jones says there are several things government can do
to help people struggling through this economic downturn. She is calling
for a task force to be established by government, similar to that
established in central Newfoundland; new apprenticeship training made
available; and the fast-tracking of infrastructure projects such as the
hospital, college and Trans Labrador Highway.
“The people of Labrador West want action from
government to help during these tough economic times. Infrastructure
projects have been announced and re-announced, yet nothing has happened to
move these projects forward. There are opportunities available for local
workers and businesses if government would stop their stalling tactics and
move these projects forward. People are struggling and it certainly
doesn’t appear that the Williams Government and MHA Jim Baker are
getting that message.
“It is time for action to be taken to help this
area of our province. Significant royalties are paid to the province’s
treasury from western Labrador mining projects, it is about time some of
these benefits are returned to the people to help them through this
economic crisis.”
