Whether it is the lack of air quality inspections in
schools, the lack of monitoring of private training institutions, or poor
inspection processes of school buses and slaughterhouses, the Auditor
General’s (AG) report contains a recurring theme of government
complacency and neglect, says Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.
“After reviewing the AG’s report, I question why
government’s inspection and monitoring systems appear to be in such poor
shape,” said Ms. Jones. “Public safety is at risk through many of
these issues, while other problems are the result of what appears to be a
lack of checks and balances. It is disappointing that such little
attention is being paid to overseeing government operations and to
protecting the public.”
Jones says the report should be an eye-opener for the
provincial cabinet who has allowed the proper inspections and monitoring
programs in their respective departments to lapse.
“The public is supposed to be protected through
government oversight and direction. In this report, major problems have
been identified across government that needs to be seriously evaluated.
These issues can be corrected with the appropriate policy direction and
investment. Complacency is not an acceptable excuse and I encourage
government to bring forward the necessary remedies in a timely manner.”
