After weeks of silence and no presence on the ground
in Labrador West, government is finally going to visit the Towns of
Labrador City and Wabush to discuss what impact the layoffs and downsizing
in the mining sector will mean to that region of the province, says
Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones.
“I’m pleased that government has finally gotten
the message that western Labrador is experiencing economic difficulties
that need attention,” said Ms. Jones. “It is unfortunate that the
ministers were not more proactive and instead waited to make this
announcement on the day when over 100 employees are being laid off from
Wabush Mines. While it may be late, I am hopeful that options can be
discussed and results achieved.”
Jones recently visited Labrador West and met with
groups and individuals affected by the negative economic downturn. Last
week, Jones wrote Premier Williams asking for a ministerial task force to
be established to deal with the issues in the area.
“Now that it appears Labrador West will get some
government attention, I am hopeful action will be taken to help this
region of our province. The removal of hundreds of jobs from the local
economy will certainly have an impact and government must bring forward
options for displaced workers. I certainly heard first-hand from people
that building the planned hospital, college and moving forward with work
on the Trans Labrador Highway can help generate some short-term
opportunities. I hope the ministers will get that message loud and
clear.”
