Jones meets with Combined Councils of
Labrador
Recent meetings with the Combined Councils of Labrador
(CCL) provided another opportunity to discuss important Labrador issues with
community leaders throughout this region of our province, said Opposition
Leader Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair.
“There are many priorities facing the people of
Labrador and the recent discussions with the CCL highlighted some of their
priorities in the coming months,” said Ms. Jones. “Transportation, health
care and energy issues certainly topped the agenda and I gave my commitment
to work with them to find solutions to each of these challenges.”
Some of the issues discussed at the meeting included
the possibility of a year-round ferry service between the south coast of
Labrador and the northern peninsula for the short-term, and a fixed-link
connection for the long-term; improvements to the medical transportation
assistance program to include road travel; provisions to ensure that any
Lower Churchill deal provide benefits to Labrador communities; and
solutions be found to address the challenges surrounding limited commercial
air access into the region.
“These are
very important issues to the people of our region and to me as a resident of
southern Labrador and MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair. I
certainly commit to raise these issues and work with all of our regional
leaders to get action on these files. Many of these challenges can be
overcome with the appropriate level of commitment from our government and I
will work to get these issues heard both inside and outside of the House of
Assembly.”
