Yvonne Jones was appointed Leader
of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and Leader of
the Official Opposition, on November 15, 2007.
She is the Member of the House of Assembly for
Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair and has enthusiastically served in
that role since 1996.
She is also an entrepreneur and has owned and operated
small businesses in Labrador in both the tourism and
transportation sectors.
As an MHA, Yvonne’s commitment
to her district is a labour of love as this is her home and
remains her pride and joy. Her
commitment to her Party and Province is equally as evident
through her passionate and tireless involvement in both arenas
over the years.
With the support and assistance of
her three colleagues in the House of Assembly, Yvonne has
effectively challenged government on a number of issues,
including the fishery, health, roads and other various resource
sectors. Her
demanding role as Leader of the Opposition, and her ability to
effect social change through her advocacy for people, has earned
her tremendous personal and professional respect.
Yvonne and her team have become the champions for the
people who are without representation of their wishes and
concerns as they face a majority-led, but often unresponsive
government.
Yvonne is the first woman, the
first Metis
and the first Laradorian to hold these leadership positions.
She has embraced the roles with both compassion and
strength. Yvonne’s style of leadership has been described as
consultative, yet decisive; inclusive, yet strong and committed.
Yvonne’s current strength and
depth in the political and advocacy areas have been gathered
from the various roles which she has been asked to take on, as
well as the firm directions she has taken in her personal and
professional life over the past two decades.
Beginning with her decision to
successfully run as mayor of her hometown Mary’s Harbour in
1991, Yvonne’s dynamic career took off.
She was elected to the House of Assembly in 1996 as an
Independent member and was elected for her second term in 1999,
this time as a
Liberal MHA.
Yvonne was entrusted with
increasingly challenging roles including: Parliamentary
Secretary to the Department of Works, Services &
Transportation and then to the Department of Health.
In 2003, she was appointed Minister of Fisheries &
Aquaculture (the first female to hold that position), as well as
the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
Yvonne began her career as a
journalist and has worked throughout the province as a news
reporter. She has
also carried out contract work as a researcher with Memorial
University and as a resource employment counselor with Human
Resources Development Canada.
Representing both her district and
province on numerous platforms and incorporating a perspective
that is rooted in grassroots consultation and decision, Yvonne
has played and continues to perform a significant role in
improving the quality of life not only for the people of her
district, but for residents throughout the province.
Her greatest satisfaction comes from making a difference
in people’s lives and thereby empowering a better and a
stronger Newfoundland and Labrador.
